Small Business Tips for 2009

January 26th, 2009

blue sky

Now that we’re well into 2009 and approaching the month of February, here are some key tips for small businesses:

  1. Take advantage of the free tools that are available online.  So many awesome web 2.0 applications offer free trials or versions that you have nothing to lose.  Basecamp, Freshbooks, Google Docs, Evernote, and Jott are just a few examples.
  2. Believe in black-belt productivity.  There is a science to everything, including how YOU get things done.  Focus on your process and method as you do work each day.  How can you put in 3 hours of work in one hour?
  3. Use Wordpress to power your business online.  It’s open-source, simple, powerful, and supported by a very passionate community.  Better yet, because search engines love it, you will end up getting more business in the long run.
  4. Join some forums and start talking with real experts focused on particular subjects.  They are the ones who really, really know.
  5. Take advantage of RSS feeds.  Remember when email first hit?  Look at how big of an impact it made on your life.  RSS feeds will be seen in a similar light someday.  Google Reader is probably the best RSS reader out there and makes it easy to grasp the concept.

That’s it for now!  Hope you find these tips helpful.

Freshbooks continues to make a splash

May 22nd, 2007

Originally known as SecondSite, Freshbooks continues to be on the rise with recent articles at Law.com and USA Today.  FreshBooks is an online billing and time tracking web app with a slew of outstanding features such as secure login, snail mailing, storage, support tickets, and report cards to compare your company’s metrics with other small businesses within the same industry.  Check out USA Today’s take on the report card functionality,

Ever wonder how your business stacks up against the competition in terms of sales, revenues, and so forth? Now you can find out. Freshbooks (Freshbooks.com) is an online invoicing and time tracking service that has just released “Report Cards,” a service allows small business owners to compare their company metrics against similar businesses in their industry.

Sounds impressive, doesn’t it?  It is.  At Techkrazy, we also use have been using FreshBooks to manage our billing and have found it to be as vital to our business as Basecamp - and we love Basecamp.  Freshbooks has not only just allowed us to focus more on our business, it has made the process of billing clients painless.  The name change proven to be the “tipping point,” for this web application, at least for us it was.  We tried it out for a bit when it was still named SecondSite, but it didn’t really “click,” until they changed it to Freshbooks.  We wholeheartedly recommend it to all small businesses and service providers.  Try it out.
